Student Opportunities
Learn more about our student opportunities at Intellijoint Surgical!

Intellijoint Surgical has a unique founding story, which begins as a capstone project at the University of Waterloo. Our 3 co-founders, Armen Bakirtzian, Richard Fanson, and Andre Hladio, identified an opportunity to deliver surgical navigation without the hurdles created by complicated systems.
Our flagship product, Intellijoint HIP, was designed to be helpful, reliable, and easy to use for hip replacements. From there, the Intellijoint story continued, and today, IJS is a global company with Canadian roots and 3 commercialized products. Each day, Intellijoint works towards our mission to provide effective, easy-to-use technology to all surgeons.
Intellijoint has a long-standing student and co-op program that has empowered students with the opportunity to learn while performing meaningful work that contributes to the organization. Students gain knowledge, experience, and develop skills that contribute to their career growth.

What Co-op Students Have to Share About IJS
Working at IJS for the past year has provided me with endless opportunities to grow as a software developer. With the guidance of an amazing team, I was able to improve my understanding of software design principles, architecture, design patterns, testing and further hone my problem solving and communication skills.
I was drawn to Intellijoint Surgical because I recognized that the technology platform has the ability to improve the lives of numerous patients and is accessible to all surgeons and healthcare facilities. But, I chose Intellijoint Surgical because of the team. There is a unique energy at the company. It's not everyday you get a group of smart, humble, driven individuals together to pull in the same direction.
Throughout my time at IJS, I learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration while conducting research, and the necessity of thorough understanding of industry language and techniques while reading academic literature. I greatly enjoyed my role at IJS, especially using the VIEW platform to analyze medical imaging which showed me the real world application of our product. I also enjoyed the pursuit of the newest and most applicable research to help my clinical team.
This is my second co-op term at IJS and has provided me with deeper insight into the operations and projects in the QARA department. Over the last 4 months, I have utilized the knowledge and skills gained from my first co-op to handle the responsibilities and day-to-day work assigned. Besides, I have opportunities to work on cross-functional projects, which allows me to connect with other co-ops and colleagues. This has given me a better understanding of the business and goals in each department at IJS. I’m grateful for the constant support and guidance provided by everyone at IJS, especially from the QARA team.
My role on the Knee team has allowed me to witness the entire development process. Programming in the wonderfully clean codebase, contributing to live product development, and observing rapid testing and V&V are just a small part of that - all alongside working and befriending some of the kindest, funniest people at IJS (shout out Knee team devs). Thank you, this experience has been phenomenal!
My internship at IJS has been extremely rewarding. My biggest takeaway would be the significance of collaboration within and between the various departments. Being a part of the Operations Department allowed me to work with experienced individuals and learn from their experiences and extensive knowledge. I am grateful for everyone’s support and the knowledge I have gained.
I've really enjoyed my time at Intellijoint Surgical. I gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to be an effective cross functional team. Everyone was open to having coffee chats and discussions about their role, which was an incredible learning experience for me as I'm coming from a background in the public sector. Once you step into the office and start talking to people, it's obvious how excited they are about the work they're doing, and that's a huge part of what made this co-op so fulfilling. Thank you to the Med Ed Team and PM for Intellijoint Knee for looping me in and making me feel like a true IJSer!
